Course Outline

The primary aim of this course is to provide you with the basic ability to converse in Irish in the carrying out of your duties.

Diligent study will enable you to apply these fundamentals of the Irish language constructively. After completing this course, you will be able to continue improving your speaking and comprehension skills through either more advanced courses and/or independent study. We recommend that you allocate approximately 15 hours of study per lesson.

The course was developed with an emphasis on the spoken language and on the language required in the work environment particularly that required to conduct business with clients and customers. It has been shown that this is a very effective way of learning language as opposed to learning from the written word.

Students availing of this course can listen to each sentence spoken and listen to the complete conversation. This helps develop fluency and confidence. Students will go online at a time convenient to them, which will be prearrange, and speak with an experienced tutor in a live session. A grammar section is included in each lesson for those who wish to study the structure of the language and improve fluency and precision.

Lesson One deals with the vocabulary required to deal with telephone enquiries and the problem call. Listen to and follow an illustrated dialog which introduces you to basic conversational skills like: greeting another person, introducing yourself, finding out the other person's name, what they require and if they wish to leave a message along with dealing with the problem call.

Lesson Two is shorter than lesson one and deals with a visitor to an office who is looking for a form. Listen to the dialog as the receptionist directs the visitor to the appropriate office.

Lesson Three is based in a library but the vocabulary is universal in that it can be used in any situation where information or goods are be requested. In this lesson listen to the conversation which takes place between a customer and a librarian. Learn how to explain that an item is not available currently but that it will be ordered.

In Lesson Four listen to the vocabulary used at the reception of an admissions office in a hospital. Follow the dialogue which builds on the conversational skills learned in the preceding lessons , finding out the out person's name, address, date of birth and other personal details required to complete a form.

Each lesson also has a section on business tips which takes the learner through some tips in telephone etiquette, the dos and don'ts of e-mail etc. These are things we take for granted but from time to time it is good to refresh our knowledge in these matters.
